A 75-year-old charity worker was chased through a Melbourne street by a man allegedly wielding a cricket bat after an attempted robbery at a Salvation Army store in Mentone.
Footage shows the elderly man being pursued following the incident on Florence Street shortly after 6pm on Monday, August 31, Victoria Police said.
Police allege a 30-year-old man had been stealing from a charity bin when he was confronted by the 75-year-old. The younger man is accused of taking a cricket bat from the bin and assaulting him.
It is further alleged that the man threatened the victim and demanded his phone before members of the public intervened and restrained him.
The 75-year-old Mentone man suffered injuries described by police as non-life-threatening and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The alleged offender, also from Mentone, was arrested and charged with attempted armed robbery, assault and affray. He was remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
