Devon Sawa has been pictured looking markedly different from his appearance in Eminem’s iconic Stan music video, more than 25 years after he became one of the defining faces of early-2000s pop culture.
The Canadian actor was 21 when he played the troubled title character in the 2000 video, which starred Eminem as the rapper’s increasingly desperate fan and featured Dido’s sampled vocals. The role remains one of Sawa’s best-known performances.
That same year, Sawa led the cast of the original Final Destination film as Alex Browning, a teenager who foresees a catastrophic plane crash. His performance in the horror film helped secure his place among the most recognisable young actors of the era.
The Stan video, directed by Dr Dre and Philip Atwell, became a lasting reference point for obsessive celebrity fandom. Its title later gave rise to the widely used term “stan” for an intensely devoted fan. Sawa has continued to work in film and television, but his dual association with Final Destination and Eminem’s music video has ensured that he remains instantly familiar to audiences who grew up in the early 2000s.
