Gwyneth Paltrow has reportedly postponed a private dinner she planned to host for OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman at her home in Amagansett, New York, after the event prompted widespread backlash.
The 53-year-old actress was due to hold the gathering on August 29 in honour of the 41-year-old technology executive. The planned evening was described as a private, off-the-record dinner, with cocktails followed by a seated meal.
News of the event drew criticism online, particularly from people concerned about artificial intelligence’s impact on Hollywood and other creative industries. Some commentators accused Paltrow of being “tone-deaf” for appearing to celebrate one of the technology sector’s most prominent figures.
A source told People that the dinner had been postponed because of the backlash and was unlikely to go ahead. Neither Paltrow nor OpenAI had publicly confirmed the event or issued a statement about its reported postponement.
Paltrow initially appeared to respond to the criticism with humour, sharing mock invitations on Instagram featuring fictional guests including Shrek, Jessica Rabbit and M3GAN. She also joked that the menu would include “swordfish burritos” and cheddar foam lattes.
