Andy Lee has revealed how Hamish Blake secretly arranged an elaborate bucks party ahead of Lee’s wedding to Rebecca Harding, tricking him into arriving at a building site before unleashing 15 stages of increasingly unusual challenges.
The comedian had been told by his builder to attend a meeting at his new Melbourne home on Saturday 29 August to discuss a list of outstanding issues.
Instead, he was directed towards the basement, where about 30 friends were waiting to surprise him.
“I got told by our builder that there was a long list of things that I needed to go through on-site,” Lee said during an appearance on Triple M’s Mick in the Morning.
“So, I got there and he said, ‘Let’s start in the basement’ but I wanted to talk about the side-fence.”
Lee said his friends had been forced to remain hidden while he dealt with the supposed building work. When he finally reached the basement, they were dressed as different versions of him from throughout his life.
“They handed me a beer, and away we went from 10 in the morning,” he said.
The group then boarded a bus and headed to Carlton Football Club, where Lee took part in a kicking contest against Carlton players Jesse Motlop and Ashton Moir.
Lee, a passionate Carlton supporter, admitted there were punishments when he lost — which he said happened — before describing the most extraordinary challenge of the day.
He said he was left naked except for a Melbourne Stars helmet and told to run across a golf course while 20 friends used golf clubs to hit balls in his direction.
“There were a few punishments if I lost to them… which happened,” Lee said.
“I won’t give away anymore, except there was a part where I was nude with a Melbourne Stars helmet on and had 20 boys with real golf clubs and golf balls hitting towards me as I did a run across the golf course.”
Despite the ordeal, Lee said he had enjoyed the celebration, which had been months in the planning.
“I had the best day. It didn’t matter,” he said.
Blake’s arrangements had been complicated by the AFL’s Wildcard Round, with his Melbourne Demons facing Lee’s Carlton side. Lee said he was able to watch Carlton’s match during the party, although he was about an hour from the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
“Hamish never puts work into anything. So, I did watch the game, but I wasn’t anywhere near the MCG… I was an hour away,” he said.
The celebration came shortly after Harding held a Wuthering Heights-themed hens party in Melbourne.
Lee and Harding, who have been together for more than a decade, are due to marry in New York in October.
