A heat advisory has been extended across much of the Bay Area until 10pm on Wednesday, with inland communities including Concord, Livermore, San Jose and Gilroy facing several days of temperatures close to 100F (38C).
The National Weather Service said the advisory would remain in place for the inland Bay Area and parts of the Central Coast as hot conditions persist into the working week. Coastal areas, including San Francisco, coastal Marin and beaches around Monterey Bay, are covered by a separate warning lasting until 10pm on Sunday.
Inland temperatures are expected to reach between 95F and 102F (35C to 39C) from Monday to Wednesday. The East Bay, South Bay and inland valleys are likely to experience the most sustained heat, with limited overnight relief in some areas.
Temperatures around the Bay are forecast to range from 80F to 90F (27C to 32C), accompanied by clear skies and hazy conditions. Along the coast, highs should remain closer to 65F to 72F (18C to 22C), although fog is expected to retreat from beaches during the day.
The weather service has also warned of elevated fire-weather conditions in higher terrain through Thursday, driven by hot, dry conditions and poor overnight recovery. Forecasters expect cooler weather to begin returning towards the end of the week.
A Spare the Air Alert remains in effect through Sunday night. The Bay Area Air District says such alerts are issued when pollution, particularly ozone during the warmer months, is expected to reach unhealthy levels, and advises residents to consider limiting strenuous outdoor activity.
The heat will also be felt at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday, when the San Francisco 49ers host the Denver Broncos. Temperatures in the Santa Clara area are expected to reach about 97F (36C), with a mix of sunshine and cloud.
