Jessica Lange has said her acting career may be nearing its end, while leaving open the possibility of taking on a small number of projects already in development.
The 77-year-old actress discussed her future in a new interview following her return to American Horror Story for its 13th season.
Asked what she might do next, Lange said: “I actually feel it coming to an end.” She suggested that her performance as Mary Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey Into Night could prove a fitting final film role, although she noted that a couple of other projects have been in development for some time.
Lange also said it had become increasingly difficult to get the kinds of films she wanted to make produced.
If she does eventually step away from acting, she said she would like to be remembered “for some good parts. For some good films. For being an honest actor.”
She reflected on her gratitude at having spent decades doing work she loved, despite the difficulties of balancing her career and family life while working in different filming locations.
Jessica Lange’s return to American Horror Story
Lange returned to American Horror Story this year, having last appeared in the series in 2018’s Apocalypse. The latest season allowed her to revisit four of her best-known characters.
They included Constance Langdon from Murder House, Sister Jude from Asylum, Fiona Goode from Coven and Elsa Mars from Freak Show.
“Why I said yes to this season was the idea of revisiting, reprising these four roles,” Lange said, adding that she enjoyed the repertory-style experience of returning with the same actors each season to create different characters.
Her career has included film, television and theatre. She won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for Tootsie in 1982 and later won best actress for Blue Sky in 1994. She also received Oscar nominations for Frances, Country, Sweet Dreams and Music Box.
Among her other notable credits are King Kong, Cape Fear and Grey Gardens. She won a Tony Award in 2016 for playing Mary Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey Into Night.
