J.K. Rowling’s superyacht has reportedly arrived at Marina del Rey in Los Angeles with its name covered, amid claims that the move was intended to avoid attracting protests from transgender-rights supporters.
The vessel, identified by local residents and yacht enthusiasts as the 89-metre Samsara, docked on Sunday, August 30. Its nameplate was concealed while it remained in the harbour, prompting speculation over the identity of its owner.
People familiar with the yacht claimed on social media that it belongs to the Harry Potter author, who has become a prominent figure in the debate over sex and gender after repeatedly voicing gender-critical views.
One online commenter said the yacht’s name was covered because it “often attracts protesters”, while another described its ownership as the “worst-kept secret on the marina”. A further claim suggested the vessel had been targeted by demonstrators during an earlier visit to the area.
There has been no public confirmation that Rowling herself was aboard the yacht, and she has not announced a visit to Los Angeles.
The vessel was built by Dutch shipbuilder Oceanco in 2015 and has previously sailed under the names Infinity and Cloud 9. It was reportedly acquired by Rowling in 2023 and later renamed Samsara.
Estimated to be worth about $150 million, the yacht is reported to have accommodation for guests and crew, as well as a swimming pool, cinema room and beach club.
