Luis Enrique has revealed that Bradley Barcola left Paris Saint-Germain for Liverpool because the forward wanted more regular first-team football than the manager could guarantee.
Barcola completed his move to Anfield on 31 August, signing a long-term contract with the Reds after three seasons at PSG. The France international has since been handed the No 29 shirt.
“Barcola grew enormously in Paris, but he also helped the team grow enormously,” Enrique said, in comments relayed by Fabrizio Romano.
“He wanted more playing time than I could guarantee him. In the end, I think everyone is a winner with that transfer. I truly wish him all the best.”
The 24-year-old was part of the PSG squad that won successive Champions League titles, but competition for places in Enrique’s attack restricted his opportunities to start consistently.
Bradley Barcola begins new chapter at Liverpool
Liverpool confirmed that Barcola had made 152 appearances for PSG, scoring 39 goals and registering 35 assists. He also collected three Ligue 1 titles during his time in the French capital.
The winger arrives on Merseyside after making a significant impact at this summer’s World Cup, where he scored three times for France during their run to the semi-finals.
Barcola has already made clear that regular football was central to his decision to join Liverpool. Speaking after completing the transfer, he said his immediate ambition was to help the club win the Premier League.
“All I want is to be on the pitch and be able to play,” Barcola told Liverpool’s official website. “First of all, winning the Premier League – it’s one of my biggest dreams in my life.”
His arrival gives Liverpool another high-level option across the forward line as the club reshapes its attack. The Frenchman can operate on either flank or through the middle, and will now look to establish himself in the Premier League after struggling to secure an undisputed starting role at PSG.
Enrique’s comments suggest the transfer suited all parties: Barcola has moved in search of greater responsibility, while PSG have allowed a player who remained highly regarded to pursue a fresh challenge.
