A magnitude 5.9 earthquake in the Banda Sea, north of Darwin, caused tremors to be felt across the city and its northern suburbs on Friday evening.
Residents reported the shaking at about 9.30pm, with people in Jingili and Palmerston among those describing the effects.
“Whole house shook here in Jingili,” one local said. Another resident in Palmerston reported: “Rocked for quite a bit.”
A third person described the movement as “a gentle shaking but very unusual”.
The Bureau of Meteorology said there was no tsunami threat to Australia.
