Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a spectacular stoppage-time equaliser on his Everton debut to secure a 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
United had appeared to be heading for victory after twice taking the lead, but the deadline-day signing produced a stunning strike from outside the penalty area in the sixth minute of added time.
The match was goalless at half-time before Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock shortly after the restart, finishing in the 47th minute to put Manchester United ahead.
Everton responded seven minutes from time when Tyrique George, who joined the club from Chelsea during the summer, drove a powerful effort into the top corner to make it 1-1.
The hosts’ celebrations were short-lived. Benjamin Šeško restored United’s advantage five minutes later, heading Luke Shaw’s cross beyond Jordan Pickford.
Everton refused to settle for defeat, however, and Maitland-Niles delivered the decisive moment deep into stoppage time. The former Arsenal player found space outside the box before sending an emphatic finish into the net to rescue a point for David Moyes’ side.
The result leaves both teams with a share of the points after a dramatic second half in Liverpool, with Everton twice recovering from behind to deny Manchester United.
