London’s Metropolitan Police have confirmed that a letter containing allegations about Thomas Markle Sr was sent to Meghan Markle, after being received by the force in January 2019.
The letter was passed to the Metropolitan Police’s Protection Command because of concerns about the security of the Duchess of Sussex. Officers decided it should be sent to the office of Meghan and Prince Harry for their awareness.
However, the force said the allegations concerning alleged offending outside the UK were not shared with other law enforcement agencies.
“Following a thorough review of Met Police systems and records, we have confirmed that in January 2019, we received a letter containing several claims about alleged offending outside the United Kingdom,” the Metropolitan Police said.
The force added that it was examining how the letter had been handled to determine whether the Independent Office for Police Conduct should review the matter.
Meghan had previously said she was “deeply distressed” by an investigation by Philippine officials involving her father and had cut ties with him after receiving the letter.
There is a discrepancy over when she received it. Meghan has said it arrived in 2018, while the Metropolitan Police records place the letter in early 2019. A representative for the duchess said “any discrepancy of a few months” was due to the passage of time.
Thomas Markle Sr has denied the allegations made against him.
