Michigan driver’s licences have been misprinted for about 8,200 people who recently applied for or renewed an enhanced licence or state identification card.
The cards were issued with a stock photograph of an unidentified man, rather than the holder’s image, along with a generic date of birth: January 12, 1967.
The Michigan Secretary of State’s office said the mistake was caused by a vendor error affecting a batch printed on August 26. It stressed that the photograph and other incorrect details did not belong to another Michigan resident.
Some of the affected cards also carried template wording on the reverse, including “last name”, “first name” and “middle”, instead of the cardholder’s details.
Corrected licences and ID cards are being mailed automatically to those affected. Residents can also obtain a temporary licence or ID online or at a Secretary of State branch while they wait for the replacement.
The department said an old licence or ID remains valid for travel provided it has not expired.
