Enzo Maresca believes Manchester City now possess the midfield depth needed to challenge Arsenal for the Premier League title and compete across every front this season.
The City manager has overseen a major reshaping of his engine room, with Enzo Fernández, Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi arriving during a busy summer transfer window.
“If you want to be there competing, you need options,” Maresca said. “Arsenal have options, we have options, more teams have options. Not just us!”
He added: “I’m very happy with the options we have.”
Manchester City midfield depth gives Maresca greater flexibility
The comments underline the importance Maresca places on having several high-level alternatives, particularly with City facing the demands of the Premier League, Champions League and domestic cups.
Fernández joined from Chelsea in a deal worth £125m, while Anderson arrived from Nottingham Forest for £116m. Bouaddi, meanwhile, is viewed as a promising young player capable of developing into a significant first-team contributor.
Fernández made an immediate impact on his City debut in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Coventry at the Etihad Stadium. The Argentina international released Antoine Semenyo with a well-weighted pass before the winger crossed for Erling Haaland to score the only goal of the game.
It was also a landmark afternoon for Anderson, who was named man of the match after another energetic display. Maresca has stressed that the England international can operate either as a holding midfielder or in a more advanced No.8 role.
“The good thing about Elliot is the day by day, he’s asking how he can learn and he wants to be better,” Maresca said after the Coventry win.
Bouaddi was introduced late on during the match, giving him his first taste of Premier League football in front of the Etihad crowd. Maresca has already indicated that all three new midfielders will be central to City’s plans.
“For Elliot, Enzo and Ayyoub it’s because we knew that we need to change something,” he said before the Coventry fixture. “They are quite young and full of energy.”
City’s midfield reconstruction follows the departures of several established players, including Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Nico González and Tijjani Reijnders. The scale of the changes means Maresca will have to establish a new balance, but the manager is confident the increased competition will benefit his side.
With Arsenal having set the standard in the title race, Maresca believes the ability to rotate without significantly weakening the team could prove decisive over the course of the campaign.
