Maya Jama has reportedly signed up for the third series of Netflix drama The Gentlemen, as speculation over Meghan Markle joining the cast was dismissed by one of the show’s leading stars.
The Love Island presenter, 32, is understood to have agreed to return after making her acting debut in the second series of Guy Ritchie’s crime caper.
Netflix has confirmed that The Gentlemen will return for an eight-episode third season. However, trade publication Variety reported that the new series remains in pre-production and that further casting has not yet been finalised.
Jama features in the second series as Aisha, one of several new additions to the cast alongside Hugh Bonneville, Benjamin Clementine, Benedetta Porcaroli, Chris Eubank Jr and Amra Mallassi.
Rumours that Meghan Markle could appear in the third series intensified after reports that the Duchess of Sussex had held early talks about a possible role.
But Theo James, who plays aristocrat-turned-crime boss Eddie Horniman, played down the claims in an interview. After joking that Sarah Ferguson would play his love interest, he said the speculation was “mainly a lot of hot air”.
James added that a third series was expected to go ahead, although its detailed story remained undecided. Guy Ritchie, the show’s creator, writer and director, has said the criminal world at the centre of the drama will expand further when it returns.
The second series of The Gentlemen, which follows Eddie as he becomes embroiled in his family’s underground cannabis empire, was released on Netflix on September 3.
