Microsoft has fixed a Windows 11 mouse settings reset bug that changed cursor personalisation options on some computers after users installed the KB5120998 preview update.
The problem affected devices running Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, with reports that customised cursor designs and animations were replaced by standard settings. In some cases, removing the update did not restore the previous configuration.
Microsoft said the fault was linked to code components in certain non-English versions of Windows. The affected settings failed to load correctly, causing Windows to apply its default values instead.
“In impacted locales, these settings will fail to load, causing a default to be used instead,” the company said. “Attempting to manually restore the settings values is not successful, as the issue prevents loading these settings regardless of their value.”
The bug was introduced by KB5120998, released on 27 August as an optional update containing changes to the Start menu, taskbar and Windows search. Most users had to select “Download and install” manually, although it could be installed automatically when the option to receive the latest updates as soon as they become available was enabled.

Microsoft said the issue was resolved in the KB5124008 cumulative update, released on 8 September, and urged affected users to install the latest security update.
“We recommend you install the latest security update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one,” the company said.
The resolution follows other recent Windows mouse problems, including an issue that disabled USB mice and keyboards in the Windows Recovery Environment. Microsoft has also been investigating reports of the pointer disappearing for some classic Outlook users when it is moved over the application interface.
