Police in Sydney are searching for the mother of a newborn boy after his body was found in a rubbish bin in Auburn, in the city’s south-west, on Monday morning.
Emergency services were called to Harrow Road at about 11.20am on August 31 after a woman discovered the baby while putting rubbish into a bin at the front of a unit complex. Officers from Auburn Police Area Command attended and found the body of the newborn boy. The baby is believed to have been no more than 36 hours old. Police said he was naked and wrapped in material resembling a bin bag.
A crime scene has been established opposite Al-Faisal College, while detectives examine CCTV and appeal for information about the circumstances surrounding the death.
Acting Superintendent Darren Sly said the discovery had been “a horrific set of circumstances”. He said police were particularly concerned about the welfare of the child’s mother, whose identity and whereabouts remain unknown.
Police are urging the woman to attend her nearest hospital for urgent medical treatment. They have also appealed to anyone who may know her to contact officers and help ensure she receives care. Detectives are examining footage from the area and want to hear from anyone who was on Harrow Road on Monday morning, particularly those with relevant dashcam or mobile phone recordings.
