A person has been hospitalised after being shot by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in New York City’s Marble Hill neighbourhood, law enforcement sources said.
The shooting happened at about 4pm on Thursday near West 225th Street and Marble Hill Avenue. The victim was taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).
The NYPD said its officers were not involved in the shooting. Video from the scene showed numerous law enforcement personnel in the area, while a grey vehicle with a bullet hole in its windscreen was left in the middle of the road.
Preliminary information indicated that ICE agents had been trying to take someone into custody when another person, who was not the focus of the arrest, was shot, according to law enforcement sources.
New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani said that, based on “early reports”, a five-year-old child had been in the car with the victim when “multiple rounds” were fired. He said the child was not injured.
Mr Mamdani added that he had called President Donald Trump to “demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city”.
An FBI official said its evidence response team was attending the scene to assist investigators from the US Department of Homeland Security, ICE’s parent agency.
New York governor Kathy Hochul said she had been briefed on the incident and called for a full account of what happened.
“We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident,” Ms Hochul said. “New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.”
New York City Council speaker Julie Menin said she was “deeply concerned” by reports of the shooting and urged federal authorities to provide a transparent account without delay.
Authorities are continuing to investigate. A CBS News analysis said there had been at least 30 shootings involving Department of Homeland Security officers during the second Trump administration, some of which had been fatal.
