Newcastle 2-2 Bournemouth saw the visitors surrender a two-goal advantage as Jacob Ramsey struck in the 88th minute to preserve the hosts’ unbeaten start under Matthias Jaissle at St James’ Park.
Bournemouth looked set to claim their first victory under Marco Rose after Tavernier opened the scoring inside nine minutes before Malick Thiaw turned the ball into his own net midway through the first half.
Newcastle responded almost immediately. Harvey Barnes cut in from the left and curled a fine finish into the far corner just 27 seconds after Bournemouth’s second goal, giving the home side renewed hope before the interval.
The Cherries remained the more threatening team after the break and created the clearer chances, with Bournemouth registering 17 attempts compared with Newcastle’s eight.
But the pressure eventually told when substitute Ramsey found space late on and guided the equaliser into the corner, extending Newcastle’s unbeaten opening to the Premier League season.
The result continued a damaging pattern for Bournemouth, who have now failed to hold on to a winning position for the third consecutive match. They have dropped seven points from such positions this season, more than any other side in the division, while their wait for a first win under Rose goes on.
Newcastle, meanwhile, remain unbeaten after three league matches under Jaissle, having followed an opening-day draw with Liverpool with victory at Tottenham before holding Bournemouth.
