Spencer Pratt has branded Ryan Reynolds a “tool” after the actor described the 1980s as a “tumultuous” and traumatic period while promoting his new Apple TV film, Mayday.
Reynolds, who plays a US Navy pilot in the Cold War action comedy, questioned the way nostalgia can soften memories of the decade, pointing to the political tensions and wider social problems of the era.
His remarks prompted a sharp response from Pratt, who accused Hollywood of being “seriously its own worst enemy” and criticised Reynolds for challenging the fond memories many people have of the 1980s.
Reynolds made the comments during an interview linked to the release of Mayday, in which his character, Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly, is stranded behind enemy lines after a secret mission into Russian territory goes wrong.
The film sees Kelly form an unlikely alliance with Nikolai Ustinov, an eccentric former KGB agent played by Kenneth Branagh. Apple describes the feature as a buddy action comedy set during the height of the Cold War.
Mayday was due to premiere globally on Apple TV on Friday, 4 September 2026.
