A teenager has died after a two-vehicle crash in Cypress, Texas, in which one car struck a tree and another rolled over several times. The collision happened shortly after midnight on Saturday, October 24, on Tuckerton Road in the 20,200 block, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said a Lincoln Aviator was travelling east in the outside lane while a Honda Accord was in the inside lane, near the junction with Fry Road and Cypress Creek Bend Drive.
The Lincoln was approaching the Honda from behind when the Accord began changing lanes, authorities said. The Lincoln then struck the Honda’s rear right side, sending it off the road and into a tree.
The Lincoln rolled repeatedly and one of its passengers was thrown from the vehicle. The passenger, identified as Jarmelo Vertudez, was taken to hospital but later died.
Five people aged between 16 and 18 were travelling in the Lincoln, while the Honda was carrying two teenage passengers. It was not immediately clear whether anyone else had been injured.
The Lincoln’s driver was also taken to hospital. Deputies said the driver showed signs of intoxication, while the driver of the Honda remained at the scene and did not appear to be under the influence.
The sheriff’s office has not disclosed the Lincoln driver’s condition or said whether charges will be brought. The investigation remains ongoing.
