Olympic silver medallist Jack Beaumont intervened after a speedboat allegedly collided with a rower from Maidenhead Rowing Club on the River Thames.
The incident happened on the morning of Sunday, August 30, when the vessel is alleged to have struck a single scull before heading towards another member of the club.
Beaumont, 32, challenged the speedboat’s skipper and was then allegedly approached by the vessel. He is said to have rowed away from danger while drawing the boat away from other rowers on the river.
Thames Valley Police arrested a 67-year-old man from Windsor in connection with the incident. The force said he was being held on suspicion of criminal damage, threats to kill, a Section 4 public order offence, common assault and using a watercraft in a manner that endangered a structure or individual. Maidenhead Rowing Club said one of its members had been involved in a collision with another river user and that damage had been caused to club equipment.
“We regard this as a serious and dangerous incident,” the club said, adding that the safety of everyone on the water was its “absolute priority”. It said members involved were being supported and that it would not comment further while the police investigation continued. Beaumont began rowing at Maidenhead Rowing Club and later represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games. He won silver in the men’s quadruple sculls at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, having also competed at Rio 2016.
