Tottenham Hotspur have explored a late move for Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams, but Forest are determined to keep the Wales international at the City Ground.
The interest is understood to be at an exploratory stage, with no indication that Tottenham have made a formal offer. Forest, however, are not prepared to consider selling the 25-year-old before the transfer window closes at 11pm BST on Tuesday, September 1.
Tottenham face obstacle in Neco Williams pursuit
Williams is regarded as an important member of Oliver Glasner’s squad and is expected to play a significant role for Forest this season. The club are also in discussions with him over improved terms, despite his current contract running until the summer of 2029.
The defender’s versatility is understood to appeal to Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi. Williams can operate on either flank, although he has predominantly played at left-back during his time at Forest.
Tottenham are seeking further cover after allowing Djed Spence to join Inter Milan. Pedro Porro remains the club’s first-choice right-back, but there is no specialist alternative in the squad, with Archie Gray able to fill in when required.
Spurs have greater depth on the opposite flank through Destiny Udogie, Andy Robertson and Ben Davies, although Udogie has attracted interest from Italy and Robertson and Davies are both in the latter stages of their careers.
Williams made 39 appearances in all competitions during Forest’s 2024-25 campaign and has established himself as a reliable Premier League performer since joining from Liverpool in 2022. League records show he made 37 appearances, including substitute outings, last season.
With Forest unwilling to weaken their squad so close to the deadline, Tottenham may have to wait before revisiting their interest. Williams’ long-term future is likely to remain a subject of discussion if he continues to impress under Glasner.
