Two men arrested in connection with a suspected terror plot near RAF Fairford have been rearrested on suspicion of assisting Iran’s intelligence service, Counter Terrorism Policing said.
The suspects are a 24-year-old UK national and a 25-year-old dual UK and Iranian national, both from Westminster, London. Police confirmed that Iran is the country linked to the investigation.
The younger man was first arrested near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on September 27. The second man was arrested in Westminster on October 1.
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of national counter terrorism policing, said the investigation remained ongoing and that officers were continuing to gather evidence.
“This is very much a live investigation, and our evidence gathering continues, but at this time our position remains the same; we consider it highly likely that there is Iranian state involvement,” he said.
“Our investigators are continuing to examine what that level of involvement was and the ambition behind it.”
Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously said the UK Government believed Iran had “played a part” in the incident.
