US forces have struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a US official, in the first American military action against Iran in a month.
The launchers were targeted after Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were observed preparing to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the strategic waterway, the official said.
The US military completed clearing mines from the strait’s international shipping routes last week. American forces said they were continuing to monitor the area and remained ready to protect the free movement of commercial vessels.
Iranian semi-official news outlets reported explosions near Larak Island. A statement carried by Iran’s state broadcaster said several members of the Revolutionary Guard and other Iranians had been killed or wounded.
The Revolutionary Guard warned that the attack would be answered and would lead to “punishment of the aggressor”.
