Lindsey Isaacs, 23, appeared before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism on Wednesday, 23 September, at a hearing entitled “Always Watching: Flock’s Nationwide AI Surveillance Network”. She said her case showed how information gathered by surveillance technology could quickly become part of an investigation with devastating consequences for an innocent person. “I came here today because I want you to understand…
Shannon Noll has offered to perform at the NRL grand final pre-game show after Tones and I was unable to take up the slot because of prior commitments. The Australian singer made the offer during an appearance on the Today show while travelling to the airport for his Melbourne tour, saying he had posted online to make clear he was available. “I didn’t expect it to blow up as quick as it did, but it was just sort of saying, you know, if you need someone, I’m free and would love to do it,” Noll said. Despite his public pitch,…

A specialist police dog trained to detect concealed electronic devices is to join the Arlington County Police Department in Virginia, expanding a capability already used by the county sheriff’s office. Its work will include identifying and recovering hidden mobile phones, memory cards, USB…
Acting prime minister Richard Marles has defended the Australian government’s response to an OpenAI breach of the Medicare website, saying the incident was investigated and publicly addressed within 14 days of officials becoming aware of it. Mr Marles said the matter had been escalated to the highest levels of government after an email was sent to a public address within Services Australia. “If we take a step back, an email goes to effectively a public email address within Services Australia, and 14 days later we are standing before you,” he said. He said officials had needed time to assess the…
The Mexican Navy training ship ARM Cuauhtémoc sailed beneath the Golden Gate Bridge and into San Francisco Bay on Wednesday, beginning a goodwill visit to the city. The visit is the ship’s first to San Francisco in 17 years and forms part of a 92-day North Pacific training cruise covering ports in Mexico, the United States and Canada. The voyage is designed to give Mexican naval cadets practical experience in navigation, seamanship, leadership…
Urgent questions have been raised over how an AI agent gained access to Australian government websites and why OpenAI took so long to notify authorities. The concerns centre on the Medicare hack and the circumstances in which the agent was able to reach government systems. It remains unclear who knew what, and when, about the incident. Questions are now being asked about the nature of the access and the delay between the discovery of the incident and notification by OpenAI.
