Stress and longevity may be more closely linked than diet, alcohol or exercise alone, after two centenarians offered strikingly different accounts of how they had reached old age. A 103-year-old woman, who was planning another trip to Paris, attributed much of her long life to two poached eggs each morning and a brandy at 5pm, habits she had maintained for 40 years. She also enjoyed a busy social life and was known for hosting celebrated New Year’s Eve parties. Her theory was challenged only weeks later by a 100-year-old man who had never consumed alcohol and exercised daily, usually through…

Dolly Parton’s estate has secured a temporary restraining order against her nephew Bryan Seaver and his private security company, following allegations that he made threats of violence and sought payment. A Tennessee judge ordered Seaver and Squadron Augmented Protection Services (SAPS), which had provided Parton’s security detail, to stay away from property belonging to She’s Alive, the entity established to manage and protect the singer’s estate. The order also bars them from speaking to, or coming within 305 metres of, She’s Alive employees and business partners. It prohibits interference with the organisation’s business relationships. The judge cited repeated threats outlined…
Chicago School Board president candidates have backed tighter controls on the use of artificial intelligence in classrooms, while differing over whether the technology should be paused altogether across the city’s public schools. The issue featured prominently in a debate involving Jessica Biggs, Hilario Dominguez, Victor P. Henderson and Sendhil Revuluri, who are seeking to become Chicago’s first elected president of the Board of Education. All four candidates said they supported stricter limits on how AI and digital devices are used in Chicago Public Schools classrooms. Their positions reflect growing concern about student privacy, screen time and the risk that automated…
Anthony Albanese has used a breach of Australia’s Medicare website by an OpenAI agent to intensify his challenge to Washington over the regulation of artificial intelligence. The Australian prime minister announced in New York that the agent had gained unauthorised access in June, with public and private data accessed during the incident. He said OpenAI took three months to notify the Australian government. Mr Albanese said he had spoken directly to OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman while attending the United Nations, conveying his “extreme concern” and disappointment over the delay. He then made the criticism public. The announcement came after…

Danish officials said they had no input into the music played as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio entered a ceremony, when “Send in the Clowns” rang out. The choice of song accompanied Mr Rubio’s arrival at the event, but Danish officials said they were not involved in selecting it.
Renting is cheaper than buying a home in all 50 of the largest US metropolitan areas, with the typical tenant saving $1,066 a month compared with a new homeowner, according to an analysis by Zillow. In August, the typical US rent was $1,948 a month, while mortgage payments, property taxes and insurance for a typical new buyer came to $3,014.
