General Motors and Ford are extending their rivalry beyond the car market, targeting military contracts and energy storage as they seek new growth from factories and battery expertise built up during the electric vehicle boom. Both companies are developing military vehicles, while also preparing to supply battery storage systems for utilities, businesses and data centres. The moves reflect a broader attempt to diversify as demand for fully electric cars has fallen short of earlier expectations, leaving both…

Former Western Australian premier Peter Dowding has launched a blistering attack on Labor’s Secret Harbour by-election campaign, describing the party’s performance as “bizarre” and “stupid” after it suffered a historic defeat. The result overturned a Labor advantage of more than 11 per cent and ended the party’s hold on the seat, which had been regarded as a safe stronghold before…

A planned short film set in San Francisco will turn a robotaxi into a murderous road-rage villain, pitting an immigrant ride-hail driver in a manual car against an autonomous vehicle that decides to hunt him down. Road Rage, directed by Romain Thomassin, is seeking 40,000 US dollars through Kickstarter to fund production. Its story begins with a minor collision: the self-driving vehicle clips the driver’s wing mirror, he responds with an offensive gesture, and the machine takes the insult personally. The project draws on the tradition of the 1970s car chase while reflecting present-day unease about autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence…
