A six-year-old child and a 35-year-old man have been killed after a truck drove on to a soccer field at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, during an afternoon match.
The victims, who were both from McPherson, were not related, police said. Eleven other people, aged between five and 68, were taken to hospitals, with 10 suffering traumatic injuries that were believed to be non-life-threatening. Sedgwick County dispatchers began receiving emergency calls at about 3.25pm on Saturday, according to Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses. The vehicle remained at the scene and its 34-year-old driver, a woman from Garden City, was taken into custody.
Two children were inside the truck at the time. Police also believe the driver had another child playing at the sports complex, although not on the field where the incident happened. No charges have been announced and investigators have not said what caused the vehicle to enter the pitch. Witnesses and members of the public began helping the injured before emergency crews arrived. Police said more than 30 witnesses had been interviewed by Saturday evening and asked anyone with photographs or video from the complex to contact investigators.
“We have a really good idea of what happened. What we’re working to do now is do the investigation to determine how it happened and why,” Captain Moses said.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan praised civilians who had given first aid, saying their response was “indicative of the Wichita community”. Mayor Lily Wu described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy for families who had gathered to watch children play football.
Play in the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s girls’ flag football championship, which was taking place on an adjacent field, was suspended. The remaining matches were cancelled, while the City of Wichita said all events at the complex had been called off until further notice.
