Elliot Anderson matched a Premier League passing feat last achieved by Rodri as Manchester City edged past Coventry 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, prompting praise from Coventry manager Frank Lampard.
Anderson completed 143 of his 155 attempted passes, giving him a 92.3 per cent accuracy rate. Squawka reported that he was the first midfielder since Rodri against Sheffield United in December 2023 to attempt at least 150 passes while maintaining an accuracy of 92 per cent or higher.
The Manchester City midfielder also led his side for touches, entries into the final third and interceptions during a match that proved far more competitive than the scoreline suggested.
Frank Lampard hails ‘very smart’ Elliot Anderson
City secured their third consecutive Premier League victory through Erling Haaland’s powerful diving header before half-time, but Coventry created several opportunities and threatened to level during an increasingly tense second half.
Anderson’s control in midfield helped the hosts withstand that pressure, with the summer signing increasingly appearing at ease in his new surroundings. Enzo Fernandez was introduced to the starting line-up at short notice after Nico O’Reilly was injured during the warm-up.
Lampard, who was watching Anderson in person for the first time, was impressed by the 23-year-old’s performance.
“I’ve admired him from a far. This is the first time I’ve seen him in the flesh,” the Coventry boss said after the match.
“He’s very talented, very smart. I think he’s going to be a very good midfielder for City. I respect a high level player like that.”
Haaland’s header, supplied by Antoine Semenyo, ultimately proved decisive, although Manchester City needed several important interventions from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to protect their narrow advantage.
The result keeps Enzo Maresca’s side at the top of the early Premier League table, while Anderson’s performance offered further evidence that he is becoming an important part of City’s midfield rebuild.
