A Virginia mother and her daughter were killed in a wrong-way I-270 crash in Montgomery County, Maryland, after a suspected drink-driver collided head-on with their Toyota on Saturday evening.
Maryland State Police said the crash happened at about 6.46pm on 29 August 2026, when a Ford Mustang was travelling north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 270, just south of Democracy Boulevard.
The victims were named as 46-year-old Musammat Shamima Begum, of Burke, Virginia, and her 23-year-old daughter, Areebah Jahin, of Alexandria. Both were passengers in the Toyota Camry.
A 62-year-old man who was driving the Toyota and an eight-year-old girl also inside the car survived. They were taken by ambulance to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Suspected drink-driver charged
The Mustang driver, 32-year-old Jose Caballero Nolasco, of Germantown, was the sole occupant of his vehicle. Investigators believe alcohol impairment contributed to the collision.
Nolasco was treated in hospital for injuries before being released into police custody and taken to the Montgomery County Detention Centre.
He faces several felony and misdemeanour charges, including two counts of grossly negligent manslaughter, two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol and one count of causing life-threatening injury by motor vehicle.
Nolasco remains in custody pending an appearance before a court commissioner.
