Estevao Willian is reportedly concerned about his prospects at Chelsea under new manager Xabi Alonso and could consider a move in January if his lack of first-team opportunities continues.
The 19-year-old winger has made only a brief appearance in the Premier League this season, coming on for the final seven minutes of Chelsea’s opening-day victory over Fulham. He was then left on the bench for the 4-3 win against Brighton.
ESPN Brasil reports that Estevao remains keen to establish himself at Stamford Bridge but is increasingly uncertain about his role in Alonso’s plans. Any decision on his future is understood to depend on how much game time he receives during the first half of the campaign.
Estevao Willian facing increased competition at Chelsea
Chelsea’s attacking options have expanded significantly since the end of last season, with Morgan Rogers arriving from Aston Villa on a contract running until 2033. The England international was one of the club’s major summer additions and has been used in the advanced attacking positions by Alonso.
Alonso has begun his tenure with a system featuring two attacking players behind the central striker, placing further emphasis on competition between Rogers, Cole Palmer and Estevao. The Brazilian is believed to feel most comfortable operating centrally, where Palmer has established himself as one of Chelsea’s key players.
Estevao’s first season in English football nevertheless offered considerable encouragement. He made 36 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing three assists, while becoming Chelsea’s youngest Premier League player to create a goal.
His campaign was interrupted by a thigh injury suffered in April, which also ruled him out of Brazil’s World Cup squad. After returning to fitness, he began the new season hoping to build on the progress made during his debut year.
For now, there is no suggestion that the situation has developed into a dispute between the player and Chelsea. However, with the competition for attacking places intense and European football absent from the club’s schedule this season, regular minutes may be difficult to secure.
If that does not change, Estevao could reassess his position when the January transfer window opens. A departure would place some of Europe’s leading clubs on alert, given the winger’s reputation as one of the most promising young players in Chelsea’s squad.
