John Mayer has released “Tom and Jerry”, his first solo song in six years and the first track issued through his newly launched label, Sob Rock Records.
The 49-year-old musician’s last solo release was his 2021 album Sob Rock. He has since appeared on other artists’ songs, including Lainey Wilson’s “Phone, Keys, Wallet” earlier this year.
John Mayer explains the meaning behind “Tom and Jerry”
Mayer said the unusual title was taken from the name he gave the first voice memo containing the song idea.
“‘Tom and Jerry’ was the name I used when saving my first voice memo with this song idea. ‘And if you ever come through, which I doubt you’ll do, I’ll run away with you.’ From that moment on, the adventure began in bringing that feeling to life,” he said.
He added: “I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating every time – I get to work with a group of incredibly talented and deeply dedicated artists who will stop at nothing until the sound comes into focus and becomes a picture. I can’t wait to tell you more about it, but first, it’s important that you know who contributed to this track.”
Mayer co-wrote and co-produced the song with Blake Slatkin. “Tom and Jerry” is the first release on Sob Rock Records, which has been launched in partnership with Mercury Records.
“Working with Tyler Arnold and the talented team at Mercury Records has already proven to be a great partnership,” Mayer said. “The path from creative vision to execution has never been easier or more rewarding. I feel very inspired, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
Mayer is also set to headline a residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas in 2027.
