Two drivers were killed in a five-car pile-up on Interstate 280 in Los Altos after a northbound vehicle crossed into the southbound lanes, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened at about 5pm on Thursday, October 22, on the major Bay Area freeway. The vehicle travelling in the wrong direction collided with traffic heading south, triggering a chain-reaction crash involving five cars.
Both drivers died in the collision, according to the CHP. Further details about the victims and the circumstances that led to the vehicle crossing the median were not immediately released.
All southbound lanes were closed for about four hours while emergency services dealt with the wreckage and investigators examined the scene.
