Manchester City, Newcastle United and Aston Villa are monitoring Atletico Madrid winger Alex Baena after his impressive start to the season, with early discussions over a potential future move understood to be possible.
The Spain international has scored three times in his opening three matches, performances which have attracted interest from several leading European clubs. Atletico, however, have no intention of making him readily available and would be expected to resist any approach during the season.
Sources familiar with the market believe clubs could make contact ahead of the January transfer window, although a move next summer appears more realistic. Bayern Munich and other unnamed European sides are also thought to be keeping track of Baena, but the strongest interest so far is understood to have come from the Premier League trio.
Atletico Madrid determined to keep Alex Baena
Baena remains a significant part of Diego Simeone’s plans at the Metropolitano. He joined Atletico from Villarreal in 2025 and is contracted to the Spanish club until June 2030.
Atletico’s stance means any interested club would probably need to make a substantial offer to force negotiations. The Spanish side have already demonstrated their resolve in retaining key players, and a mid-season agreement for Baena is regarded as particularly difficult.
Manchester City are understood to be among his keenest admirers. The Premier League champions are assessing attacking reinforcements after losing Omar Marmoush and Savio during the summer, with Baena viewed as a player capable of adding creativity and versatility.
Newcastle are also considering further options in the final third, while Aston Villa have lost Morgan Rogers to Chelsea. Baena’s previous connection with Villa manager Unai Emery, who worked with him at Villarreal, could add to the club’s interest.
Despite the growing attention, there is no indication that Atletico are actively seeking a sale. The immediate priority for the Madrid club is to keep Baena in Simeone’s team, leaving Manchester City, Newcastle and Aston Villa to decide whether to pursue exploratory talks now or wait until next summer.
