Microsoft has warned that the Windows 11 KB5120998 update can reset mouse settings, leaving some users unable to restore customised cursor appearances and animations.
The problem affects systems running the optional August preview update, which was released on 27 August for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2. Reports indicate that cursor personalisation may be altered automatically after installation.
Users have described high-DPI pointers being replaced by larger white cursors, while customised cursor animations can revert to Windows’ standard settings. Attempts to reapply the previous configurations have reportedly failed.
Microsoft said the issue could cause “appearance regressions and intermittent animation changes”. The company has acknowledged receiving reports but has not yet identified the underlying cause.
“Microsoft has received reports indicating that mouse cursor personalization settings are being changed or reverted to certain standard settings,” the company said in a notice. “This occurs following installation of Windows updates released August 27 2026 (KB5120998) and later.”
The update is not installed automatically for most users. It must be selected through the “Download and install” option, unless the setting to receive the latest updates as soon as they become available has been enabled.
KB5120998 also includes changes to the Start menu, taskbar and Windows Search. Microsoft has asked affected users to submit details through the Feedback Hub while its investigation continues.
