Newcastle United face a fresh decision over Jacob Murphy after rejecting two late bids from Nottingham Forest for the winger, including an offer understood to be worth £15m.
Murphy, 31, is entering the final year of his contract at St James’ Park. Unless he agrees an extension, Newcastle risk losing him as a free agent in the summer of 2027.
Football Insider reported that Forest made their approaches during the final days of the transfer window, with an initial £10m proposal followed by an improved bid. Both offers were turned down after Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle made clear that he wanted to keep the experienced forward.
The decision has left the Magpies with a difficult balancing act. Murphy provides cover across the wide positions and is regarded by Jaissle as an important senior figure in a squad that has undergone significant change during the summer.

Craig Hope reported that Jaissle has quickly recognised Murphy’s influence within a young dressing room, as well as his continuing ability to contribute on the pitch. Newcastle were also reluctant to lose another experienced player without securing a replacement before the deadline.
Murphy made 46 appearances last season and recorded nine goal contributions, although his role has become less prominent following the arrival of Anthony Elanga, who is now ahead of him in the pecking order on the right.
That makes the decision to reject Forest’s offer a significant gamble. Newcastle have retained a versatile squad player, but they may have sacrificed a sizeable transfer fee for a footballer who could depart for nothing if negotiations over a new deal do not progress.
The club will need a clearer view of Murphy’s long-term importance before the January transfer window. If Jaissle continues to rely on him regularly, contract talks will become increasingly urgent; if his involvement remains limited, Newcastle may have to consider accepting a reduced fee rather than risk losing him without compensation.
