A Buckeye mother fought off an intruder in her home after police say her fiancé arranged the attack with a man he met online.
Zarian Dyer, 23, was arrested in Arizona on charges including aggravated assault, sexual abuse, attempted sexual assault, kidnapping and conspiracy. The alleged victim, identified by local media as Bella Torres, was at home with her two children when Adrian Ayala, 20, entered the property on 16 October, police said. Torres told officers that Ayala attacked her before fleeing. She pursued him outside and managed to fight him off in the driveway, with the confrontation captured on home-surveillance video.
Police identified Ayala from a description of his vehicle and a partial registration number provided by the woman. He was arrested at his home in Goodyear the following day. During the investigation, detectives seized electronic devices belonging to Ayala and Dyer. Buckeye Police said messages found on the devices showed the two men communicating about a planned assault, although investigators said the motive remained unclear.
Court documents cited by Arizona media allege that Dyer contacted Ayala through Reddit and gave him instructions about when to go to the house, where to park and how to enter. Prosecutors also alleged that Dyer wanted Ayala to assault the woman while she was alone and to contact him by FaceTime during the attack. Ayala’s lawyer said in court that his client had been invited to the home as part of a role-play scenario. Police have said the woman appeared to have no knowledge of any alleged arrangement.
Investigators also alleged that Dyer installed and later removed the Reddit application on the day of the attack. When questioned, he denied involvement and described the allegations as false, according to court reporting. Dyer was arrested at his workplace near Roosevelt Street and Verrado Way on 29 October. His bond was set at 500,000 dollars, according to a report of his initial court appearance. Ayala is also facing charges connected with the incident. It was not immediately clear whether either man had entered a plea.
Carissa Planalp, a Buckeye Police Department spokesperson, said the attack had been a frightening ordeal for the woman and her children, and praised the victim for providing information that helped detectives identify the suspect.
