Powderfinger have confirmed a reunion and their first Australian tour in 16 years, delighting fans who had been following a series of cryptic teasers across the country.
Frontman Bernard Fanning announced the plans in a video released on Friday morning, saying the band intended to “do some shows all around Australia from September next year”.
Lead guitarist Darren Middleton told fans they were “going to build something pretty special” for them.
The announcement followed a week of clues appearing in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, including billboards featuring Powderfinger’s distinctive letters, symbols and numbers graphic.
The campaign was also linked to an Instagram account called The Return of the Electric Horsemen, named after a song from the group’s 1996 album Double Allergic. On Thursday, the official Powderfinger account posted the same image, while the Horsemen account shared a photograph showing it projected on to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
“Red means run, son. Numbers add up to…. Nothing? or Something…” the account wrote in its caption.
The account follows no one, although the official Powderfinger account follows it.
Powderfinger formed in 1989 and broke up in 2010. The reunited line-up comprises Fanning, Middleton, Ian Haug, Jon Coghill and John Collins.
