The Proclaimers have launched a defence of JK Rowling’s views on women’s rights, criticising Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint for publicly distancing themselves from the author.
Charlie Reid described the actors as “those f***ing bairns who Rowling made massive fortunes for” during an interview in which the Scottish brothers discussed transgender rights, free speech and their forthcoming album.
He said the trio did not need to agree with Rowling, but should have defended her right to express her views.
“It was not necessary that each of them stood up and agreed with her,” Reid said. “But you would have thought someone would stand up and say, ‘We live in a free country. Thank goodness we have freedom of speech.’”
He added: “She is exercising her right to a point of view. I do not necessarily support it. But I support her right to say something. I don’t remember any of them saying anything like that.”
Rowling’s public dispute with transgender activists has led Radcliffe, Watson and Grint — who became famous as child stars in the film adaptations of her books — to distance themselves from her position.
Craig Reid said the brothers’ comments were rooted in concern about what they regard as growing pressure to conform, rather than hostility towards transgender people. He described those who reject biological distinctions between men and women as “truth-phobic”.
“I’m not transphobic,” he said. “I’m not against a man identifying as a woman, dressing as a woman. I’m not against any of that. All I’m against is saying that he actually is a woman when he’s not a woman.”
The comments come as the Proclaimers prepare to release their new album, You May Offend, on Friday. The record addresses subjects including gender politics, cancellation and freedom of speech.
Craig Reid said the brothers had never allowed others to dictate what they should say or perform, adding that people must be prepared to speak openly even when their views may prove unpopular.
