Virgil van Dijk has backed Cody Gakpo to play a central role for Liverpool this season after the forward’s proposed move to Manchester City collapsed at the end of the transfer window.
Gakpo responded to the uncertainty in emphatic fashion on Friday, setting up both of Alexander Isak’s goals in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
The Netherlands international was involved in the opening goal after six minutes and supplied another assist three minutes later as Isak struck twice in a blistering start for the visitors.
Van Dijk backs Cody Gakpo after Liverpool transfer saga
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Van Dijk praised his international team-mate’s performance and made clear that Liverpool had always regarded him as an important part of their plans.
“Great goals, Cody outstanding. Onto the next,” the Liverpool captain said.
Asked about Gakpo’s importance to the squad following the late transfer speculation, Van Dijk added: “Massive, I’ve said it before the transfer window times, he’s important for us. He will be important this season. I’ve known him for the last couple of years, he’s still going.”
The comments came days after Manchester City saw an offer worth £80 million rejected by Liverpool. Reports suggested Gakpo had been open to a move and preferred a switch to the Etihad Stadium over interest from Tottenham.
Liverpool ultimately decided against sanctioning the transfer after becoming concerned that they would be unable to find a suitable replacement so late in the window. The club had already strengthened its attack with the arrival of Bradley Barcola, but was unwilling to lose another senior forward without adding further cover.
Manchester City subsequently turned their attention elsewhere, while Gakpo held talks with Liverpool officials following the failed move. He has since remained at Anfield and immediately demonstrated why the club were reluctant to let him leave.
His two assists against Ipswich also continued a productive start to the campaign, with the forward having already contributed goals and assists in the opening weeks under Liverpool’s new management.
For Van Dijk, Gakpo’s display offered an early indication that Liverpool’s decision to block the transfer could prove significant as they pursue silverware on multiple fronts.
