Five people killed when an Amazon cargo plane overshot a runway at Miami International Airport have been identified by authorities, as investigators continue to examine the cause of the fatal crash.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz named the victims on Tuesday as Rolando Aleman Leon, 55; Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, 53; Julio C Pineda, 75; Carlos Acosta Fajardo, 53; and Javierkys Reyes Quevedo, 47. The five were in a Ford Econoline van which was struck after the Boeing 767 ran beyond the end of the runway while landing on Sunday, 6 September. The vehicle was used by Professional Ocean Service Corp, a company that provides aircraft-cleaning services at the airport, according to investigators. The aircraft, operated by North Carolina-based 21 Air on behalf of Amazon Air, had been flying from San Juan in Puerto Rico to Miami. National Transportation Safety Board chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said the aircraft travelled at least 1,300ft beyond the paved surface before striking several vehicles. It then broke through the airport perimeter and hit a Toyota Corolla Cross before crossing grass and another fence line near an area where Tesla robotaxis were parked. Five people were injured in the crash. Three remained in hospital on Tuesday, with two in critical condition and one in a stable condition, while the two pilots were treated and discharged.
