Warm, humid weather is set to return to Washington DC on Wednesday 9 September, with temperatures approaching 89F (32C) under mostly sunny skies.
The National Weather Service said the capital region would remain dry through the day, offering favourable conditions for outdoor plans despite a noticeable rise in humidity. Southerly winds of up to around 18mph could make it feel warmer.
The heat will give way to a more unsettled pattern on Thursday as a cold front approaches. Showers are expected to become more likely from the late afternoon, with thunderstorms possible and temperatures reaching about 90F (32C).
Rain could continue into Thursday night, when the National Weather Service puts the chance of precipitation at about 80 per cent. A few heavier bursts and thunder are possible as the front moves through the area.
Friday should be cooler, with an early shower risk before brighter conditions develop and highs near 84F (29C). The weather could turn unsettled again over the weekend, particularly on Saturday, when showers and a possible thunderstorm are forecast.
The weekend is not expected to be a complete washout, however, with some dry and brighter spells likely. The Washington DC area should gradually become drier early next week.
