Washington DC commuters faced a wet start on Monday October 12 as showers linked to the remnants of Hurricane Isaias moved across the capital region before gradually clearing.
The National Weather Service said rain would be heaviest during the early part of the day, with conditions expected to improve later in the morning. A high of about 73F was forecast in Washington, with north winds reaching up to 20mph.
Maryland and Virginia were also affected, with forecasters warning that locally heavy rain could still lead to isolated flooding in vulnerable areas. Rainfall totals of one to two inches had already been recorded across parts of the wider region, with higher amounts reported near the Blue Ridge.
The storm system also brought breezy conditions, although the threat of severe thunderstorms had eased by Sunday night. The National Weather Service said a brief tornado could not be ruled out in isolated areas, but the main concern for the Washington area was persistent rain.
Conditions were expected to become partly sunny after the morning showers, with clearer and warmer weather forecast for Tuesday.
