Witnesses told investigators that the Jeep was travelling west at high speed when it struck the Honda as the car was leaving a residential neighbourhood.
The female driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other occupants were taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
The adult male driver of the Jeep and a juvenile male relative who was travelling in the SUV were not hurt, according to Sergeant Garcia of the Houston Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Division.
Police said the Jeep driver showed signs of intoxication. He was assessed by drug-recognition experts at another location and is facing a charge of reckless manslaughter.
The charge could be upgraded to intoxication manslaughter as the investigation continues. Police said the driver had no previous history of reckless driving or driving under the influence.
The identities of the driver and the dead woman have not been released. Authorities have also not said what relationship the driver had with the juvenile passenger.
