A driver accused of killing two recent Southern Methodist University graduates in a crash near White Rock Lake had reached 82mph on a road with a 35mph limit, an arrest affidavit says.
Aldrea Rogers, 22, has been charged with two counts of manslaughter over the 6 October collision on Garland Road in Dallas. She was arrested on 16 October and remains in the Dallas County Jail, with bond set at $500,000. Garland Road crash investigation
Dallas police were called to the 9200 block of Garland Road after three vehicles were involved in a crash. The affidavit says Julian Harris was driving a Toyota Prius eastbound on Knob Oak Drive, with Madison Duren in the passenger seat.
As the Prius attempted to turn left on to Garland Road, it was struck by a Hyundai Elantra driven by Rogers, according to the document. Harris died at the scene, while Duren was taken to hospital and later died from her injuries.
The affidavit alleges that Rogers was travelling at a peak speed of 82mph before the collision — 47mph above the posted limit. Her two children were also in the Elantra and were taken to hospital, but survived.
Rogers faces two second-degree felony manslaughter charges. The allegations have not been tested in court, and it was not immediately clear whether she had a lawyer representing her.
Harris and Duren had recently completed degrees at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts and were active in the North Texas theatre community. Duren’s family said she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in May 2026, while the couple had met during their time in the university’s theatre programme. Friends remember young theatre performers
The couple’s friends said they had been leaving their apartment near White Rock Lake when the crash happened.
Eli Barron and Emmet Overcarsh described the deaths as “incomprehensible and bizarre”, saying Harris and Duren had devoted themselves to acting, learning and the local arts scene.
“They were obsessed with knowledge, obsessed with learning, obsessed with people,” Barron said.
Overcarsh said the fact that Rogers’ children were also in the car made the circumstances feel even more unreal.
“Them going together weirdly enough feels a bit comforting in a way — but then again, nothing about this is really comforting,” he said.
A memorial service for Harris and Duren is due to be held at SMU on Saturday, 31 October, at 4pm.
