One of seven Cornell fraternity members accused of gang-raping a fellow student allegedly telephoned a sorority member and asked her to ensure her friend did not discuss what she believed had happened at a party. The sorority member, who had been at the Chi Phi house on the night of the alleged sexual assault, told investigators that the accused man called her the following day. She said he asked her to make sure her friend did not “say anything that she thinks might’ve happened last night”. She passed on the message. Her friend later told investigators that it “clicked” when…

A dog in Leawood, Kansas, led a police officer to its owner after finding them on the floor of an open garage, unable to get up. The incident happened on 17 September, when a Leawood Police Department officer spotted the animal standing in the middle of a residential road with its lead still attached but no owner in sight. Body-worn camera footage shows the dog barking at the patrol car. The officer initially tried to send it home, but followed when it moved away, covering about half a block to a nearby property. Perth Wildcats beat South East Melbourne Phoenix in the NBL, overturning their earlier-season defeat despite being undermanned. Perth’s improved finish proved decisive as they held on to secure the win and reverse the result from earlier in the season.
The US added just 29,000 jobs in September, far short of economists’ forecast of 90,000, while the unemployment rate edged up to 4.2% from 4.1% in August. The weaker-than-expected September jobs report suggests some businesses are delaying recruitment amid higher inflation and surging energy prices. The figures also raise questions about the strength of the labour market after the Federal Reserve’s first interest rate increase since 2023. Hiring was subdued across much of the economy. Healthcare, which has been a major source of job growth this year, added 17,000 workers, while financial services employment fell by 7,000. “Only healthcare and…
A New York Times games executive allegedly gave his daughter a children’s book about mourning a mother’s death while his wife was still alive, according to court documents filed during the couple’s bitter divorce. Candice Jang said she found Jonathan McKinsey’s choice of The Memory String “deeply disturbing and frightening”, particularly because she alleged he had previously threatened to kill her and her parents. “I cannot know what Jonathan intended by selecting that particular book,” she wrote in a restraining-order filing. McKinsey, 40, was shot dead in a California car park last weekend. His in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen,…
Paramount Skydance will be renamed Skydance when its merger with Warner Bros. Discovery closes next week, chief executive David Ellison has announced. The change marks the latest stage in a period of significant expansion for the company, which has completed two major acquisitions in the past 18 months. Mr Ellison said the new corporate name was intended to give the combined business its own identity while preserving Paramount and Warner Bros. as separate studios. “Paramount and Warner Bros. shaped over a century of culture,” he said. “By combining them, we aren’t rewriting history — we’re equipping these iconic studios with…
New bodycam footage of Luigi Mangione’s arrest shows police placing him in handcuffs inside a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a five-day manhunt. The footage captures an officer asking Mangione to remove his mask before police privately indicated that they believed he was “100%” the suspect they were seeking. Mangione initially gave officers a fake identity. When they asked whether his real name was Mark Rosario, he confirmed his identity and acknowledged that he “clearly shouldn’t have” lied. Police discover magazine during search During a search of his backpack, officers found a gun magazine wrapped in his underwear. One officer…
