Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and halt fighting in the Middle East, dismissing Tehran’s offer as a sign it was under mounting pressure. Iran presented the initiative at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, saying it had been passed to the US through Qatari mediators. Under the proposal, the strategic waterway would reopen and hostilities across the region would end within seven days. Speaking to reporters at the White House on Saturday, Mr Trump said: “I reject their proposal. … I rejected their deal.” He added: “They want to make…

Geoffrey Hinton has warned that artificial intelligence could wipe out humanity as an unintended consequence of pursuing a seemingly harmless task, saying systems may develop subgoals that lead them to treat people as obstacles. The computer scientist, whose work earned him a Nobel Prize and the description “godfather of AI”, said the danger was not limited to malicious users. Even a system given a benevolent objective could derive its own methods of achieving it, including taking control away from humans. Hinton was among experts who briefed US lawmakers behind closed doors on the risks earlier this month. He later told…

A powerful nor’easter is bringing damaging winds, heavy rain and a serious coastal flooding threat to New Jersey, Delaware, New York City and Long Island, with the storm expected to reach its most disruptive phase this weekend. More than 40 million people are in the system’s wider path as it stalls offshore, driving water towards the coast during successive high-tide cycles. Forecasters warn that flooding, dangerous surf and severe beach erosion could continue through Sunday. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill declared a state of emergency across eight counties from 5pm on Friday, activating the state’s emergency operations centre. Atlantic, Burlington,…

Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian has said Tehran would honour a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume nuclear talks, while warning that deep distrust makes a meeting with Donald Trump difficult. Speaking in a televised interview, Mr Pezeshkian said Iran would “abide by whatever we commit to” if the United States accepted the offer, which envisages reopening the strategic waterway after seven days and restarting negotiations towards a final nuclear agreement. The proposal was put forward by Iran’s foreign minister during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Mr Trump said on Saturday that he had rejected…
The body of a missing British pensioner has been recovered from the rubble of a gas explosion in Athens that destroyed a two-storey building and killed six people. A 77-year-old British man and his 78-year-old Albanian-born wife had been seen on their second-floor balcony shortly before the explosion. Fire officials believe a leak in the second-floor gas supply line caused the blast, although a full investigation has been delayed while the search operation continues. The bodies of all…
