An Ohio woman who went missing from her home was found dead on top of a train car more than 100 miles away in Indiana, prompting a homicide investigation. Brittany Ritter, 37, from Holland, near Toledo, disappeared between September 1 and 2 after she was last seen riding a bicycle. Her family reported her missing when they were unable to contact her. Her body was discovered around midday on September 3 in Elkhart by a Norfolk Southern employee, who reported seeing an “apparently deceased person” on the railcar. Police identified Ritter through her tattoos and fingerprints. She was a mother…
Republican concern is growing that North Carolina’s Senate race is slipping away, as nominee Michael Whatley struggles to close the gap on Democrat Roy Cooper despite expectations of a late surge in spending. The contest was once viewed by Republicans as one that could be revived after the summer, but public polling has consistently placed Mr Cooper ahead. A survey released on Thursday gave the former governor an 11-point lead among likely voters. The unease was evident at the Republicans’ midterm convention in Dallas, where private discussions and public speeches focused on the difficulty of winning the state and the…
A 31-year-old woman was stabbed in the arm while trying to break up a fight outside a home in Chicago’s Austin neighbourhood early on Saturday. Police were called to the 4800 block of West Adams Street at about 2.30am, where the woman had been with a group of people outside the property. According to investigators, she intervened in the altercation before being struck in the right arm with a sharp object. She did not see who attacked her. The woman made her own way to Loretto Hospital before being transferred to Stroger Hospital. She was reported to be in good…
An Australian tourist has died after falling from a cliff at Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida, an island about 20km off Bali’s south-eastern coast. The 29-year-old woman was spotted apparently stranded on the cliff at about 8am on Saturday, after other tourists alerted a local lifeguard. As the lifeguard and local residents attempted to organise a rescue, she fell on to the rocky shoreline. A Klungkung Police spokesman said the woman was found dead when rescuers reached the beach. She had suffered fractures to her arm and leg, as well as lacerations and other injuries. The woman was believed to…
Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei has warned that the race to develop artificial intelligence must slow as advances in the technology begin to accelerate and systems gain a greater role in building their successors. In an essay published on Saturday, Mr Amodei said AI companies “must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models”, while insisting that progress would remain rapid. “Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain,” he wrote. Mr Amodei said two developments had prompted his reassessment. The first was the speed at which AI…
A viral warning from a former artificial intelligence researcher who publicly resigned over safety concerns has reignited debate over whether the technology could pose an existential threat to humanity. Jacob Coxon announced his departure from Anthropic after previously working at OpenAI, saying the leading AI companies were racing towards increasingly powerful, self-improving systems without adequate safeguards. His warning spread rapidly online, prompting renewed scrutiny of the race between major technology firms to develop more advanced AI models. Coxon has argued that the companies involved are prioritising competition and capability over the risks of creating systems that could eventually become difficult…
Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks has expressed confidence that he will remain with the Crows after their finals defeat, while also saying retiring spearhead Taylor Walker will stay. Nicks used the aftermath of the loss to address uncertainty over his own future at Adelaide, making clear that he expects to continue in the role. Walker, known as “Tex”, is also set to remain with the Crows despite retiring from playing, according to Nicks.
Manchester Museum has removed the 2,700-year-old Egyptian mummy of Asru from public display, saying the decision was made to “respect her wishes”. Asru’s remains had been exhibited at the Oxford Road museum for almost 200 years. Her coffin and body are now being kept in storage while officials consider whether they should be returned to Egypt. The museum said the decision followed discussions with Egyptian colleagues, members of the Egyptian diaspora and visitors about the care and display of mummified people. A spokesperson said removing Asru was the option that “aligns most closely with what we understand about her own…
Senator Jon Husted’s campaign has dismissed its political director after discovering that he had used a photograph of Nazi SS soldiers as his Facebook profile picture. Stephen B. Woytek, 25, was appointed to the role in August as Mr Husted campaigns in a closely contested Ohio Senate race. Amy Natoce, a spokeswoman for the Republican campaign, said Mr Woytek’s social media activity showed a “complete lack” of judgement and a “disregard for its impact on others”. She said Mr Husted had taken the “immediate decision to part ways” after learning of the posts on Friday. The photograph, used in 2018,…

The 37-year-old television presenter shared the news on Instagram, posing in a green figure-hugging dress with her growing bump on show. Their daughter was pictured kissing Thorp’s stomach during the photoshoot. Thorp captioned the post: “Sparking pregnancy rumours…” The announcement prompted congratulations from several television personalities, including former Strictly Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse, This Morning presenter Dermot O’Leary, Carol Vorderman and Kym Marsh.
