RugOne is preparing to launch the Xsnap 7 Pro, a rugged smartphone with an unusual feature: one of its rear cameras can be detached and used as a standalone action camera.
The device will be offered in limited quantities through Kickstarter from 7 September at €799, roughly $930. A wider global release is planned for October, priced at $999.
The phone carries IP68 and IP69K protection ratings, meaning it is designed to withstand powerful water jets and submersion for up to 30 minutes. It can be used underwater to a depth of 2 metres, while the removable camera is rated for depths of up to 5 metres.
The detachable module records at up to 2.7K resolution and 30 frames per second through a 133-degree ultra-wide lens. That is below the 4K recording offered by compact rivals such as the DJI Osmo Nano and Insta360 Go Ultra, but RugOne says distortion correction and software stabilisation are used to keep footage looking natural and steady, including when the camera is rotated through 360 degrees.
On its own, the action camera can record for up to 40 minutes. When returned to its dock and recharged from the phone’s 9,300mAh battery, its total recording time can reach 800 minutes, according to the company.
The camera has 64GB of built-in storage, enough for up to eight hours of 1080p footage. Clips can be transferred to the phone’s 512GB storage whenever the module is docked.
The Xsnap 7 Pro uses MediaTek’s Dimensity 8400 5G processor, paired with 12GB of RAM, and comes with Android 16. RugOne says it will support upgrades through to Android 20.
Its 6.67-inch AMOLED display has a 120Hz refresh rate and can act as a wireless monitor for the detachable camera from up to 160 feet away. The phone also includes a 32-megapixel front camera, a stabilised 50-megapixel main rear camera and a 64-megapixel night-vision camera with infrared LEDs.
