Google Messages is affected by a bug that can attach an old text message to a new message before sending it to the wrong contact, with reports of the problem continuing despite a fix being rolled out.
The fault appears to revive messages previously sent in a conversation and insert them alongside a new message intended for somebody else. Users have reported seeing the error happen in real time, including when sending messages to themselves.
That could lead to anything from confusion to the accidental disclosure of private information. The issue is not affecting every Google Messages user, but reports have continued to emerge in recent days.
Google confirmed on September 2 that it was aware of the problem and said a remedy was being distributed gradually.
“We’re currently rolling out a fix that will reach everyone over the coming weeks. Please ensure you stay up to date with the most recent version of Google Messages,” the company said.
Updates for the app continue to appear on Google Play. Users concerned that they may be affected should check that they are running the latest available version, although the continuing reports suggest the fix has not yet reached everyone.
